Dr Zwelithini Mpungana is a specialist spinal neurosurgeon.
He studied in Cuba, Durban, Bloemfontein and in Cape Town. He has accumulated experience in the management of complex spine pathology, including degenerative spinal conditions, trauma of the spinal column and spinal cord, infections of the spine and tumours of the spinal column and spinal cord.
His private practice is based at the Life Beacon Bay Hospital and Royal Buffalo Specialist Hospital in East London, Eastern Cape.
Dr Zwelithini Mpungana did part his medical training in Cuba and completed in University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 2009. He completed his internship program at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital and Community Services in Tylor Bequest Hospital in Matatiela. He then worked in Rietvlei Hospital, doing general surgery and orthopaedics before starting his neurosurgery training at the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein in 2015.
In 2021 Dr Mpungana completed his master’s degree in University of Free State and was admitted as a fellow in the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa.
During this period, he developed a keen interest in the management of spine pathology and concentrated his efforts on acquiring invaluable experience in this sphere of neurosurgery. Following graduating as a Fellow of the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa in 2021, an additional year to super specialise in spine surgery in Tygerberg hospital in Cape Cown under the mentorship of Professor Ian Vlok. During his Neuro Spine fellowship training Dr Mpungana was exposed various spine surgeons in state and private practice including Spine Centre in Paarl.
The need for a Spinal Neurosurgeon in East London resulted in the commencement of private practice being established in 2022.
Doctor Mpungana regularly attends local and international postgraduate workshops, congresses and seminars, to learn about the newest research and advancements in the field of neurosurgery and offer them to his patients.
